ABOUT ME

John HS_1.jpeg
  • Hello, my name is John Rolison.

  • I have spent the last 35+ years in the lighting industry, both entertainment and commercial lighting.

  • I spent that time working for two of the largest theatrical lighting dealers and one of the largest rep agencies in the Southeast United States.

  • I like bullet points.

  • I live on a farm in a small town near Knoxville, Tennessee.

  • I like spending time working on the farm, enjoying scenery in the Appalachian Mountains, and time with the grandkids.

  • I spend a lot of time working on my grilling and smoking skills. Still a work in progress.

  • I enjoy the occasional high gravity beer (preferably of the Belgian variety) and good rye whiskey.

  • I enjoy the design process, including meeting and interacting with clients, designers, and the people that make it happen.

  • My greatest professional satisfaction is to know that I have a satisfied client with a fully functional system and a facility that meets all expectations.

RCS DESIGN METHODOLOGY

After 3 decades in the industry, I have seen enough to know what is required for a successful project. At RCS we take a wholistic view of the design and construction process, which means seeing the project through from conception to completion. We use a multistep procedure to ensure a successful project.

STEP 1: Discovery

It is important to gain as much insight into the intended use of the facility as possible. This requires a process of discovery, which means meeting with Owner or Owners Representative prior to putting pen to paper. A series of question and answer, posing options for the project, discussing existing technology, future technology, infrastructure requirements, short and long term goals with the facility.

STEP 2: Preliminary Review or Existing Venue walk through:

For new projects, a detailed review of the preliminary design documentation will be presented. Pose questions based on the review based on the Discovery meeting to Owner, Architects, Engineers, and other relevant parties.

For renovations, confirming extent of renovation, potential goals, and status of existing infrastructure and equipment.

STEP 3: Design and Documentation

Provide a set of drawings showing layout of control devices, as well as a one line riser diagram for the lighting control system. A Sequence of Operation is provided to ensure proper functionality is established for use of the system programmer to confirm all operational criteria.

STEP 4: Pre-bid Design Overview

Confirm that all construction documents are correct and include all provided documentation.

STEP 5: Post-bid Review

Review bids with bill of materials to confirm system has been bid as designed.

STEP 6: Submittal Review

Review of manufacturer's drawing and SOO to confirm system is correct and meets design intent.
